A Message to My Fellow Students

Why are you doing what you’re doing? Is it truly what you’re passionate about, or is it just what those around you are doing?

We live in a time where social media allows us to see what everyone is doing every second of the day. We can know everything about someone’s life without ever speaking a word to him or her. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to tell you that I love watching vlogs. I don’t know what it is about watching how someone else lives that interests me so much, but I love it. I’d like to think that I watch them to gain perspective on life, but that’s just the rationale I use with my parents. It’s interesting, though, how watching these vlogs can influence my daily decisions. To give you an example, I watch a lot of fitness/nutrition vlogs by people who are entrepreneurs because they share many of the same interests that I have, or so I thought…

One of the reasons I started this blog was because I saw these people making money doing online nutrition coaching, and I thought to myself, “I’d be a damn good coach.” Plus, who wouldn’t want to make money without having to follow someone else’s lead? As I began dabbling in this industry, I came to realize that while I do love nutrition coaching, my true passion lies here. It lies in sharing my experiences with you. I want to make you think and look at life with a new lens because I truly believe that I can add value to your life by doing so. That is my ultimate goal: to enable you to take away something from each of my posts. Sometimes, that’s a recipe or nutrition advice. Other times, it’s life advice. Regardless of the topic, I’ve come to see the value in preaching wellness rather than telling you to eat broccoli.

In finding this passion, I realized that I’m not made to be an entrepreneur. Yes, I have a passion and a drive unlike many others, but I found that I wanted to be an entrepreneur because that’s what the people “around” me were doing. To be completely honest, I like having a daily routine and being able to unplug from work. I want to work from 9-5 and have a side hobby like this blog. I want to ensure that I’ll have time to spend with my future family. In all honesty, I like having a defined income, not one that can change from week to week. That’s simply the life many entrepreneurs live, and that’s okay.

To some of you, this confession may sound like I’m giving up, but I’m not. I’m coming to a realization that life is about doing what I want to do and what I am passionate about. Do I 100% know what that is yet? Not in the least. But it’s my life and my journey. One decision today might affect me 10 years from now, but it doesn’t define me for the rest of my life. We live in the land of opportunity. You will change your mind and your interests will change. Don’t let that scare you because if you’re doing what you want to do and you’re passionate about it, you’ll find a way to make it work. If you don’t know what exactly that is yet, it boils down to one saying: you’ll never know unless you try.

So, to go back to the original questions: Why are you doing what you’re doing, and is it what you’re truly passionate about?

Life’s too short to live someone else’s dream.
